Comunero Revolt

The Comunero Revolt was a full-scale rebellion in Paraguay that occurred in 1720, when it was still images-3.jpega colony under Spanish rule. It began when the Viceroy in Lima reinstated a pro-Jesuit governor whom the Paraguayan settles had previously taken out of power (Independence). Decades earlier Paraguayan citizens had earned the right to elect and dispose of their own governors. Citizens became enraged and revolted.
Initially the rebellion was started by the rich wealthy families of Asunción, the governing city of Paraguay. However, once poorer farmers joined the movement the rich families pulled out and asked royal authorities to reinstate order (Independence). In response the farmers, angry at being abandoned by the rich, began to attack and seize the large estates of the rich (independence). Many of the prosperous families were driven out of their homes and the countryside. The radical army of farmers almost conquered all of Asunción in their fight. However, they were eventually forced to retreat by an army of Indians and Jesuits.
